The Hanes Partnership Story

Whittier Area Interfaith Council is now a Hanes Sock Drive Partner

Here is our story.   In 2018, Lauren Whalen, one of our annual volunteers and granddaughter of Jackie Kolnik, one of the founders of WAIC, contacted us about the possibility of obtaining socks through The Hanes Sock Drive.  We, in turn, contacted Hanes, but were too late to apply that year.

In 2019 we were contacted by Hanes, who asked if we were still interested.  We were!  In October, 2019 we were named a Hanes Sock Drive Partner and received 300 pairs of badly needed socks for homeless people in our community.

In June 2020, three months into the COVID 19 pandemic, we received another email from Hanes asking if we knew that Hanes had retrofitted some manufacturing plants to start producing cotton face masks.  They had been working on trying to get some of these face masks to become available for donation through their Sock Drive to support their partners who were working with their homeless neighbors.

In July 2020, we received 2,500 washable cotton masks.  We wish to thank Hanes for their amazing donations and caring about our homeless population.  We are proud to be a Hanes Sock Drive Partner.

In March 2021, Hanes came through for WAIC and the homeless community in the Whittier Area again!  When WAIC learned that the men staying in the city's temporary shelter needed underwear, we again sought out the support of Hanes.  We were delighted when Hanes  immediately sent us 300 pairs of socks and 200 pairs of men's underwear in a variety of types and sizes.

In November 2021, Hanes once again rapidly responded to our requests with a donation of 200 men's underwear, 300 women's underwear, 30 sports bras, 300 pairs of sox and 1500 reusable cotton masks for homeless Rio Hondo students, served by the non-profit Jovenes.

We are so grateful for all that Hanes has done for the Whittier area community!
